Kijang's ability to carry loads

I share in the compassion expressed by C.Roderick McRae in connection with the mishap encountered by Sri Sukesti during her ride in a Toyota Kijang van heading for Cipanas, West Java, as she was stopped by a traffic policeman (The Jakarta Post, Aug. 6).

The charge made was allegedly a violation of traffic regulations over the carrying of a wheelchair, small TV and personal belongings in the back compartment of the car, where the rear seat was folded down.

The policeman argued that the Kijang should not have been carrying the goods, it being a passenger car. As the public must not be fooled around, Sri Sukesti should forward her grievance to the responsible local dealer of PT. Toyota Astra Motor, which, as sole agent, has jurisdiction in this matter.

Clarification should be given by the car producer, inasmuch as the Toyota Kijang, as correctly hinted at by C. Roderick McRae, is an excellent product known for its versatility.

The adjustable position of the rear seat, which can be conveniently folded, should serve as clear evidence of the Kijang's ability to function as a multipurpose car. This feature should be well-known even to police officers, who may drive the car too when off duty.
