Kelian gets safety rating

JAKARTA (JP): The National Occupational Safety Association (NOSA) of Australia has assigned a three-star safety rating to PT Kelian Equatorial Mining, a member of Rio Tinto group in Kutai, East Kalimantan.

NOSA manager Neil Wilson said yesterday that the company was awarded a three-star safety rating -- one-star higher than last year -- because it had achieved a final report rating of 64 percent with a 12-month Disabling Injury Frequency Rate of 1.1 percent.

The gold mining company, with an annual output of 14 tons, is the first mining company in Indonesia to receive a three-star safety rating from NOSA.

A NOSA expert Brian Linnington said that even in Australia few mining companies managed to achieve a NOSA three-star rating because its standards were very high. (08)
