Kaltim Prima Coal
PT Kaltim Prima Coal (KPC) is jointly owned by Rio Tinto and BP PLC. Its high quality, low sulfur steam coal is mined under a coal agreement with the Indonesian government that entitles the government to 13.5 percent of annual production. Based in Sangatta, East Kalimantan, the open pit mine started production in 1991 and contains marketable reserves of more than 200 million tons of coal. Production is between 16 million to 18 million tons annually, with about 93 percent of the output exported to European and Asian countries.
