Juveniles housed in adult prison

JAMBI, Jambi: Juveniles and adult convicts are housed in the same prison here.

Head of the provincial justice ministry office Soekarto said there are so few juveniles that a separate facility is considered unnecessary.

"Of the Jambi prison's 292 occupants, only five are juveniles serving several months for theft," Soekarto was quoted as saying by Antara. They are confined to a separate block from those occupied by adults, he added.

Critics claim that it is wrong to put juveniles in the same prison with adults. The House of Representatives is deliberating a bill concerning juvenile courts. (pan)
