Angkot drivers protest arrests

BEKASI: About 200 drivers of route K-10 angkot (public minivans), staged a protest at the Bekasi Police office on Tuesday, demanding the release of eight fellow drivers arrested for an internal dispute.

"We want the police to release them ... they haven't gone home since the police arrested them yesterday (Monday)," Narto, a protester, was quoted by Antara as saying.

Police deputy chief Comr. Suntana calmed the protesters and showed them that none of the drivers had been thrown into jail.

"The police just finished taking their accounts. We allowed some to go home, but they insisted on staying with their friends who were still being interrogated," he said.

The drivers of the Perumnas III Bekasi-Pulo Gadung angkot were interrogated in connection with a dispute with the management of the drivers' cooperative, the Workers' Service Group (KPU).

Try Adiyanto, head of the operational unit at the Bekasi Transportation Agency, said the eight drivers had allegedly established a new KPU management, while circulating rumors that the old management had been dissolved.

"I confirm that the old management, who still have the support of a majority of drivers, is still in place," he said. -- JP
