JP/3/CHINABOX

Xiamen is a city in Fujian province on the southern coast of China with a land area of over 1,500 square kilometers, or more than twice the size of Jakarta. Xiamen is about 1,700 kilometers southeast of Beijing. Two of its six districts, Siming and Huli, lie on Xiamen island. The island, the seat of the municipal administration, occupies a land area of less than one tenth of the whole province and is often referred to as Xiamen city. The other four districts are located on the mainland, which is accessible to Xiamen city via two bridges. One of the bridges is the Haicang bridge, which looks like the Golden Gate bridge in San Francisco.

China's administrative units are based on a three-tier system:

Provinces Counties Townships

Directly under the central government: Provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities

A province or an autonomous region is subdivided into: Autonomous prefectures, counties, autonomous counties and/or cites.

A county or an autonomous county is subdivided into: Townships, ethnic townships and/or towns

China has 23 provinces, 5 autonomous regions, 4 centrally- administered municipalities and 2 special administrative regions.
