City govt prepares for the city's 467th anniversary

JAKARTA (JP): The city administration is preparing for the celebration of the city's 467th anniversary on June 22, Deputy Governor on Social Welfare RS Museno said yesterday.

He noted that the theme of the anniversary adheres to the city's motto of Teguh Beriman, which stands for continuing to live in a clean, beautiful, attractive, humane and safe environment, and that Jakarta is ready to make the sixth Five Year Development Plan successful.

The main programs for the anniversary include a thanks giving ceremony on the eve of the 22nd, the City Council's plenary session, a devotional visit to the Kalibata heroes cemetery and public entertainment in the city's five mayoralties.

Museno invited the private sector to fully participate in the city's programs so as to make the celebration livelier than those of previous years.

"A group of professionals has offered us a number of activities. And of course, we welcome their offer," Museno told a press conference yesterday.

Referring to decorations on high-rise buildings along the city's main thoroughfares, Museno said the management of the buildings should take aside their budget to decorate their buildings during the anniversary.

"I have instructed all mayors to give clear warnings to all the owners who didn't decorate their buildings last year," Museno stated.

He also asked building owners and the public in general to hoist a proper red-and-white flag during the celebration and use proper Indonesian language for anniversary greetings.

Touching on possible accidents and brawls which may happen during the anniversary, Museno stated that he doesn't expect such "celebrations" from the youth.

"Please nurture the spirit of unity, not the spirit of brawls," he pledged, saying that however small, riots may have nationwide impact. (11)
