Jones wins Continental Cup ski jump event

PARK CITY, Utah: Clint Jones of the United States soared 130 meters in the final round Saturday to edge Olympic champion Simon Ammann of Switzerland by 8.5 points in the Continental Cup ski jumping meet.

Jones, who had the best jump of the final round, finished with 251.7 points in the 120-meter competition.

"I knew I had a good one but I didn't know if it would be enough to win," said Jones, 17. "There were two good jumpers left up there."

Ammann, the gold medalist in the 90- and 120-meter events in the Winter Olympics here, jumped 124 and 125 meters for 243.2 points. Slovenia's Rok Benkovic finished third.--AP

Furlan wins Vuelta's 20th stage

SAN MARTIN DE LA VEGA, Spain: Italian Angelo Furlan edged ahead of a giant pack in the home stretch Saturday to win the penultimate stage of the Tour of Spain.

Furlan completed the 141-kilometer race from Avila to San Martin de la Vega, a suburb of Madrid, in 3 hours and 8 seconds.

Roberto Heras's 1 minute and 8 second overall lead ahead of fellow Spaniard Aitor Gonzalez, after 20 stages, was unchanged by Saturday's result.

Spain's Oscar Sevilla remained third overall, trailing Heras by 1:45, and Joseba Beloki was fourth, 2:09 behind.

Saturday's stage win was Furlan's second in the tour, but it failed to alter his 121st place overall. He also won the 17th leg from Benavente to Salamanca.--AP

India restricts Sri Lanka to 244-5

COLOMBO: India's slow bowlers restricted Sri Lanka to 244 for five despite half-centuries from captain Sanath Jayasuriya and Kumar Sangakkara in the Champions Trophy final on Sunday.

Jayasuriya top-scored with 74 in his 51st one-day 50 and fellow left-hander Sangakkara made 54 after Jayasuriya won the toss and elected to bat on a slow Premadasa stadium pitch.

Sri Lanka was prevented from posting a more formidable total by Harbhajan Singh and Virender Sehwag, who bowled superb spells of off-breaks to prevent boundaries in the latter stages of the day-night game before a sell-out home crowd.

Harbhajan removed Marvan Atapattu (34) and Sangakkara to mistimed sweeps to finish with three for 27 from his 10 overs while Sehwag proved the perfect fifth bowler, conceding only 32 runs from 10 overs.

The India fielders also saved a series of potential boundaries as Sri Lanka managed only one four after the 31st over when Jayasuriya was out.--Reuters

Roberts leads Texas Open

SAN ANTONIO: Loren Roberts birdied the last two holes Saturday to take a one-stroke lead over four players into the final round of the Texas Open.

The 47-year-old Roberts, tied for the lead with Pat Perez after two rounds, shot a 3-under 67 to reach 13-under 197 on the LaCantera Golf Club course.

Bob Tway (67), Frank Lickliter (65), Garrett Willis (66) and Matt Peterson (67) were a stroke back, and Perez (69) and Andrew Magee followed at 199. Fred Couples (65), Fred Funk (64) and Brian Gay (69) were another stroke back.

Roberts, who won the last of his seven tour titles in 2000, drove within 5 feet on the par-3 17th, a hole that gave fits to several other contenders, and followed that with a 179-yard second shot on the 18th that stopped 6 feet from the pin.

Lickliter was leading at 14 under until the 186-yard 17th, where he had his second double bogey of the round.--AP
