'Joki' in critical condition after falling from flyover
An unidentified three-in-one boy, or joki, was in critical condition on Monday after falling from the Pejompongan flyover in Central Jakarta.
An eyewitness said the boy, who was wearing a junior high school uniform, was running across Jl. Gatot Subroto like he was trying to escape someone when he fell.
"I saw him running across the street, but I do not know whether he was being chased by the police or not," Fachrul, 11, who was getting off a bus when the accident took place, told The Jakarta Post.
Other people who witnessed the accident, which occurred about 50 meters from the Pejompongan Police station, said the boy was posing as a passenger in the three-in-one zone when the police arrived.
Second Brig. Agus Rohadi from the Pejompongan Police station said the accident occurred at about 6:15 p.m. and that police were still trying to determine the identity of the boy as well as the cause of the accident.
He said the boy was immediately taken to Pelni Hospital in Petamburan, Central Jakarta.
However, Danu, 23, another eyewitness, said the boy was lying on the street for at least 20 minutes before the police took him to the hospital.
"He fell on his head and I saw a lot of blood coming from his head. I wonder why the police took so long to take him to the hospital," he told the Post.
A staff member at Pelni hospital said the boy was in critical condition.
"We do not know if he will see the sunrise tomorrow. We still don't know his identity. All we know from his notebook is that he is a student at SMP Kristen III on Jl. Diponegoro, Central Jakarta," he said.--JP
