Johnnie Walker team wins golf league

BOGOR, West Java (JP): The Johnnie Walker team hung on to win the Ericsson Corporate Golf League concluded at the Rancamaya Golf and Country Club yesterday.

Spearheaded by Justin Frizelle, the team, which had a healthy lead going into the sixth and final leg yesterday, collected a mediocre 19 league points to cling on to the top spot with an aggregate point of 152.

Mega Kuningan was just nine points behind, followed by Allan Boadle's Citra Regency team.

Senayan Golf Club team won the final leg with 30 points, but finished seventh overall.

The competition, played for the second year running, applied a ball stableford format. It fielded 64 golfers from 16 companies, including The Jakarta Post which finished in equal 12th along with Phillips Mobile Phone.

The final round of the league was scheduled to take place last month but was postponed due to sporadic riots in the capital, according to Barbara J. Spiers, the promotion manager of event organizer Indo Multi Media.

Spiers said the league gave participants an opportunity to enjoy sport and do business at the same time.

"This serves as the best venue to lobby and to compete as well," she said. "Most participants appeared to have a reunion during the tournament because they had been very close to one another since the first league in 1996."

The league offered a total of US$3,500 in cash prizes, plus four cell phones and roundtrip air tickets with Ansett Australia from Bali to Australia. (emf/bay)
