Jogja Great Sale to kick off Oct. 4

YOGYAKARTA: In commemorating the 247th anniversary of
Yogyakarta, the mayoralty administration will stage the Jogja
Great Sale from Oct. 4 through Oct. 19.

Some 4,150 stores, hotels and restaurants -- particularly
those located on famous Jl. Malioboro -- will offer discounts of
up to 70 percent.

Yogyakarta mayor Herry Zudianto told The Jakarta Post recently
that the program was aimed to make Yogyakarta, dubbed the city of
students and culture, a new mecca for trade and shopping
activities in the country.

"We hope that the program will attract more tourists to visit
Yogyakarta and shop or trade here," he said.

The Yogyakarta anniversary will be on Oct. 7 and will be the
first-ever anniversary celebration. The city's birth date was
determined after comprehensive study involving researchers from
Yogyakarta-based Gadjah Mada University. -- JP
