Jimmy Gaddys nails three titles at Supercross '94
JAKARTA (JP): Flying over the track like the angel of death, Jimmy Gaddys buried his fellow competitors, grabbing three titles in the first series of the Bentoel International Supercross '94 championships which ended Sunday in Yogyakarta.
Gaddys' Kawasaki seemed to be in the air more than it was on the track, and it won him the support of the entire crowd. He earned two of the three titles in the international 125cc class on the first and second day of the event. The third title was in the master international 250cc division on Sunday.
In both 125cc races Gaddys ate up the track, leaving Australian Cameron Taylor, riding a Honda, and American Trey Owen, on a Yamaha, in their wake.
In the 250cc master division, Gaddys, who was only at the wooden spoon on the first day, had another near perfect performance, pushing Dale Britthon and Thil Sargent, first and third winners on the first day, into third and second place respectively.
Twenty five thousand spectators packed the filled-to-capacity Mandala Krida stadium, pushing each other to get closer to the track.
The fan support was a very encouraging sight, commented Australian Bruce Wilkinson who coordinated foreign riders, "but it has prevented the crossers from making run at maximum speed." Besides, he added, crowding the track could be very dangerous if there were accidents.
The first series of the championships featured 56 international riders as well as 16 domestic crossers. The series will move to Surabaya for the second and final race on Sept. 10 and 11.
The five divisions contested were Super Master 250cc International, ABC grade 125 cc (both national and international), international junior under-14 SE 80 cc, 125cc national and a Pee-wee exhibition for four to seven year old riders. (arf)
