Jayapura drivers go on strike
JAYAPURA, Irian Jaya: Dozens of public transportation drivers
here went on strike on Tuesday following a police attack against
one of them a day earlier.
The strike left scores of commuters stranded, forcing some of
them to go on foot to their destination.
One of the protesting drivers, Muhammad, said he and his
friends launched the strike in solidarity with their friend who
was hit by a police officer on Monday.
Antara quoted police officer First Lt. Parmin as saying that
Monday's incident allegedly broke out after an unidentified
policeman rebuked public transportation drivers who did not close
their vehicle windows while passing by the regional police
headquarters office.
He said the case was still under police investigation.
