Jatiluhur has plenty of water

PURWAKARTA, West Java: The water level of the Jatiluhur reservoir is approaching the maximum limit due to the excessive amount of rain in the region, Antara reported on Wednesday.

The water level reached 106.6 meters, just 40 cm short of the maximum, the news agency said quoting the Jatiluhur management agency, Perum Jasa Tirta II.

Besides supplying water to Jakarta, the reservoir channels water to rice fields and towns in West Java.

Other major reservoirs in the province, Saguling and Cirata, also reported abnormally high water levels.

Officials at Perum Jasa Tirta II said it would take steps to ensure that the water does not overflow, by managing the stream of water coming out of the reservoir.

They said the abundant water supply would come in handy in view of predictions of another long dry spell in 2002. (04/emb)
