Japan wins int'l bridge tourney
JAKARTA (JP): The Japanese national team won the Djarum Cup International Bridge tournament after defeating the Indonesian Lippo SGS team on Sunday in a one-sided four-session final match.
The Indonesian team, consisting of Denny Sacul, Franky Karwur, Santje Panelewen and Robert P Tobing, suffered 2-26 and 8-31 losses in the first and third sessions.
Although they managed to take the second session 19-14 against Kenji Miyakuni, Kazuo Furuta, Roga Tanaka and Yoshi Nakamura, the total point lead was too far out of reach.
The Japanese team gave away the fourth session giving Indonesia a 22-0 victory, which did not do much for the total point tally of 71-51 in Japan's favor.
Meanwhile, the Pattimura team grabbed third place after defeating Garuda 84-81.
"We changed the system. We no longer used the round robin system but the semifinals and final method instead," organizer Tatang Kritiadi said.
"The change meant there were more sessions compared to the old system. It also showed that the winners have really good bridge players," he added. (har)
