Jakartans told to save water

JAKARTA (JP): Governor Surjadi Soedirdja urged Jakartans to use water carefully to avoid a supply shortage during this year's dry season.

He was responding to reports that in some city areas, such as East Jakarta, people complained of a lack of water.

"Jakartans should also guard against fire accidents. In the rainy season there were many fires but if those fires happened in the dry season it would be more dangerous...", Surjadi said on Friday.

East Jakarta mayor, Sudarsono, said that he had cooperated with the city-owned water company PDAM to provide enough water for local residents.

"People who face water shortage can report it to the mayoralty office. We will send them water for free," Sudarsono said yesterday.

Mayoralty officials have noted the areas which have the lowest water supply.

"People living in those areas will be given priority," Sudarsono said. (ste)
