Jakartans to get barcoded IDs

JAKARTA: Computer-readable ID cards with barcodes will be available to all Jakartans next year after a successful pilot project that began in April, head of the City Population and Civil Registration Agency, Sylviana Murni, said on Friday.

"The new ID cards are aimed at increasing service and monitoring residents and also to avoid fake ones," she said as quoted by the city administration official website Beritajakarta.com.

The pilot project was conducted in five subdistricts: Pondok Kelapa in East Jakarta, Pegangsaan Dua in North Jakarta, Karang Anyar in Central Jakarta, Keagungan in West Jakarta and Pejaten Barat in South Jakarta.

A month later, 38 more subdistricts were included in the pilot project.

The new blue plastic ID cards will replace the current yellow paper ID card. -- JP
