Jakarta will expand vertically

A city official has said that the city administration will encourage Jakartans to build more high rise buildings, including superblocks, due to the scarcity of land space.

"It is impossible to expand the city horizontally because the concept of sea reclamation has some weaknesses," said Erry Chayaridipura, the Chairman of City Development Planning Board as quoted by Antara yesterday.

Erry said the city administration has already formulated urban design guidelines, which will regulate the development of highrise buildings in some selected areas in the city, such as Kuningan in South Jakarta and Jl. Sudirman in Central Jakarta.

He said the concept will give property developers the opportunity to build 32-story or higher buildings. (03)
