JAKARTA: The General Elections Commission (KPU) will hold a meeting with its provincial and regental offices nationwide in two weeks to discuss electoral districts.

The meeting is scheduled to be held in Sahid Hotel here, from Aug. 5 to Aug. 9. More than 800 representatives of provincial and regental KPUs are expected to attend the four-day meeting.

Determining an electoral district will be critical in the 2004 general election, as each provincial and regental councillor is elected based on the total votes collected in each district.

Ramlan Surbakti, the KPU deputy chairman, said the KPU, through the general election law, was vested with the right to establish electoral districts. "However, we can't walk alone. It would be better for KPU to involve the provincial and regental KPUs in the establishment of electoral districts," he told a press conference here on Thursday. -- JP
