Jakarta share prices lose ground

JAKARTA (JP): Following its rebound, the market failed to sustain its upward direction with the Jakarta Stock Exchange (JSX) Composite Index, losing 4.71 points to close the week at 510.34.

Trading was featureless, with many local as well as foreign investors remaining on the sideline. Foreign investors seemed disappointed over the government's move to postpone the loosening of the 49 percent ownership limit in listed stocks.

In addition, concerns over U.S. inflation also weighted down the buying sentiment as investors feared that the higher inflation rate would cause another rise in the U.S. dollar interest rate before the end of the year.

Other factors which constrained the index include Thursday's holiday in Hong Kong and the rising tension in the Gulf between the United States and Iraq. Meanwhile, new comer Medco Energy Corporation, which was listed last Monday, failed to sustain the rally on its debut, closing lower at the end of the week.

Average daily turnover on the regular board decreased to 45.07 million shares worth Rp 36.37 billion (US$16.65 million) from 10.74 million shares worth Rp 45.55 billion in the previous week. Total turnover for the week also decreased to 109.92 million shares valued at Rp 476.98 billion from 107.24 million shares valued at Rp 499.23 billion in the previous week.

Foreign investors took a wait-and-see attitude, readjusting their position due to the shortfall in their anticipation regarding the foreign ownership limit. They were seen active mainly in counters such as Gadjah Tunggal, Duta Anggada, JIHD and Pan Brothers.

Local players mostly cashed out on their position. They were mostly concentrating on counters such as Aneka Kimia, Medco, Inco, JIHD, Gadjah Tunggal, Astra Int'l, Hadtex and HM Sampoerna.

Two bonus issues which went ex (listed) last week were Duta Anggada Realty (2-for-3) and Lippo Bank (1-for-2), while the rights issue of Lippo Land (1-for-1) was listed at the price of Rp 2,800 per share.

Some of last week's best performers were Medco Energi (up Rp 600), Semen Gresik (up Rp 500), Enseval (up Rp 350), Clipan Finance and Jaya Real Property (both up Rp 300). The biggest losers were P & G (down Rp 3,500), Surya Toto (down Rp 2,400), Nipress (down Rp 800), Wicaksana (down Rp 500) and Suba Indah (down Rp 400). Losers outnumbered gainers by 76 to 30, while 25 remained unchanged.
