'Jakarta Post' wins AJI Jakarta award
JAKARTA: The Jakarta Post journalist Bambang Nurbianto was given an award by the Jakarta chapter of the Alliance of Independent Journalists (AJI Jakarta) for the city news category on Thursday night.
Bambang's articles Global warming to badly hit Jakarta, published on Oct. 15, 2002, and Jakartans face serious water crisis, published on September 2002, were considered by AJI Jakarta as showing the writer's concern for the capital's environment.
Rommy Febri of Tempo magazine was given the award in the international news category while Maria Hasugian of Koran Tempo and Husni Arifin of Republika were given the awards in the national news category.
The awards ceremony was the second one staged by AJI Jakarta. -- JP

Teachers awarded for proposals
JAKARTA: Thirty-three high school teachers in Greater Jakarta were awarded US$500 each to implement their proposals on attractive education methods for their students. The program, in which 218 proposals were submitted, was held by Hope Indonesia Foundation and Citibank Peka.
The teachers will apply their proposal in their schools and will be accompanied by 99 volunteers from Citibank Peka.
Only five of the 33 activities by the teachers will be given cash prizes: $500 for the teachers and $1,000 for the schools. The announcement will take place in January 2004.
Eko Agus Susilo of Al Azhar 4 Islamic high school in Bekasi, one of the 33 winners, submitted his proposal on learning English through theater.
"I chose a theatrical performance, with the theme of the environment, to help students familiar with English," he said.
A member of the panel of judges Dharmayati Utoyo Lubis of the University of Indonesia school of psychology said that through such programs teachers would be able to stimulate students to comprehend subjects better.
"With such activities, students will learn more than they would through reading books. Teachers will also be encouraged to be more creative in their teaching methods," she said. -- JP

36 'abang', 'none' meet Sutiyoso
JAKARTA: Governor Sutiyoso invited the 36 finalists of the 2003 Abang and None pageant to the main auditorium of City Hall on Wednesday.
The finalists of the pageant were the chosen candidates from similar pageants held in five municipalities and Kepulauan Seribu (Thousand Islands) regency, beritajakarta news online reported.
They will compete in the final of the pageant on Aug. 8 at Jakarta Convention Center (JCC), which is scheduled to be aired live by RCTI private television.
Wednesday's ceremony was attended by head of the city tourism agency Aurora Tambunan, Central Jakarta Mayor Hosea Petra Lumbun and head of public relations and protocol H Muhayat.
Similar pageant representatives from 10 other provinces, West Sumatra, Lampung, South Sumatra, Banten, East Java, East Kalimantan, West Java, Central Java, West Nusa Tenggara and North Sulawesi, were also invited to the ceremony. -- JP
