JAKARTA: Police are scheduled to question two members of the
Islam Defenders Front (FPI) on Friday as witnesses in connection
with the inquiry into FPI commander Al Habib Muhammad Rizieq, who
is charged under Article 154 and Article 156 of the criminal code
for provoking communal hatred and inciting hatred against the
government in connection with last week's anti-U.S.
demonstration.

The city police spokesman Sr. Comr. Anton Bachrul Alam said
the two were Hasanuddin and M. Sidiq, who both were acting as
field coordinators during the rally on Oct. 15 in front of the
House of Representatives building.

Rizieq was questioned on Monday.

In a related development, two members of another group based
in Surakarta called FPIS filed a suit against the Jakarta Police
at the South Jakarta District Court.

Lawyer M. Mahendradatta said police had illegally arrested his
clients Kamidi and Ahmad Khoiri on Oct. 13 upon their arrival at
Senen railway station in Central Jakarta.

Hundreds of FPIS members came to the city to join
demonstrations against the U.S.-led military strikes on
Afghanistan. Police arrested 65 people for illegal weapon
possession. Ten of them are still being detained while the others

Three nabbed for peddling 'putaw'

JAKARTA: Police arrested three teenagers in a vacant house in
Gambir area in Central Jakarta late on Monday for allegedly
selling putaw (low grade heroin) and lexothan pills.

The three were identified as Idris Mardianto, Yosi Haryanto
and Barlian -- who are all residents of Kalideres in West
Jakarta.

Initially police received reports from nearby residents who
said that people frequented the vacant house on Jl. Makmur at odd
hours and seemed to be engaged in some kind of dubious business.

During the arrest, police confiscated five packages of putaw
and 20 lexothan pills.

In their preliminary questioning, the three confessed that
they were told by the house owner to maintain the house and to
serve customers who came to the house.

Police are still searching for the house owner, whose identity
has not been revealed. --JP

Suspected muggers gunned down

JAKARTA: Cakung Police in East Jakarta shot dead two suspected
muggers late on Monday for resisting arrest and endangering
officers' lives, a police report said on Tuesday.

Rudi, 21, and Hamba Tua Siregar, 30, died after receiving at
least three gunshot wounds each.

Police said the two had been on the police's wanted list due
to their suspected frequent involvement in crime, mostly
conducted on public transportation vehicles and also at bus
terminals in the East Jakarta area.

The suspects were spotted by police along Jl. Raya Bekasi,
allegedly after extorting money from a passenger on a public
minivan.

When ordered to surrender, they refused and drew weapons,
challenging the officers to take them by force.

After being shot by police, the bodies of the two suspected
robbers were then rushed to the state-run Cipto Mangunkusumo
General Hospital in Central Jakarta for postmortem

Electricity theft rampant in Ancol

JAKARTA: Electricity theft in Ancol subdistrict is rampant,
with only about 20 percent of residents subscribing to the state-
owned electricity company PLN and paying bills, an official of
the subdistrict said.

"Only about 20 percent of 600 houses in the subdistrict are
listed as official subscribers of PLN. The rest just steal the
electricity by connecting their houses to PLN's electricity
network illegally," Ancol Subdistrict Council chairman Sukirno
said here on Tuesday.

Speaking in Ancol on national electricity day, Sukirno said
that he was concerned electricity subscribers may also endeavor
to steal their electricity needs.

He said the electricity theft would not only harm PLN but the
residents as well, as connecting their houses illegally to the
PLN network could cause short-circuits.

"Such short-circuits have caused fires in the residential area
several times," he said, recalling fires in 1992, 1997 and 1998.
