Jakarta has 2,495 cooperatives
Governor Surjadi Soedirdja said that cooperatives have played a pivotal role in the economic development of the city .
He revealed that in the Fifth Five Year Development Plan (Pelita V) which ended this year, at least 93 new cooperatives were established in Jakarta, which is eight percent more than the targeted number. At present there are 2,495 cooperatives in the city.
Despite the encouraging growth, Surjadi underlined the necessity to promote a campaign on cooperatives among the management of city-owned companies.
At PD Pasar Jaya market authority, for example, 38 of the 165 traditional markets under the supervision of the city-owned company were still without a cooperative.
As quoted by Antara, the governor identified the obstacles in developing a cooperative in Jakarta as "a lack of vision by the cooperatives managers, insufficient funding (and) inefficiencies in transporting the cooperative workers." (mds)
