Jakarta and tourist attractions

I would like to bring some thoughts to the attention of the Jakarta tourism office which seems to be concerned about the decline in tourist arrivals. No doubt, Indonesia is one of the most beautiful countries in the world and therefore highly recommended to foreign tourists. But what could possibly attract them to visit the country's capital, Jakarta?

When visiting cities, tourists are usually attracted by historical monuments, old town quarters and charming residences. But -- and this question should be allowed -- how many attractions of this kind has Jakarta to offer? Only very few. Too many buildings of historical value have been pulled down already, sacrificed in favor of modern, functionally designed structures which look alike all over the world and of which foreign tourists have more than enough in their own countries. Besides, some of these structures could easily win an award for ugliness.

Jakarta's city planners have repeatedly announced the plan to turn various historical sites in the area between Sunda Kelapa harbor, Kali Besar and Stasiun Kota into tourist attractions. A splendid idea which deserves full support. However, except for the delightful "Cafe Batavia", very little has been done so far. Most of the old buildings in the above mentioned area are in a very deplorable condition and are going to dilapidate beyond the possibility of repair at reasonable cost if action is not taken soon.

In general, more efforts should be made to preserve historical parts of Jakarta in order to protect the city's historical identity. This would not only help attract tourists but would also please Jakartans.
