Iwik's rebuttal 'incorrect'

YOGYAKARTA: The prosecutor here demanded that the court
disregard the rebuttal statement of Dwi Sumadji, alias Iwik, who
is being tried over last year's murder of Bernas journalist Fuad
M. Syafruddin.

Amrin Naim told the Yogyakarta District Court that Iwik's
statement should have been brought before a pretrial court
hearing instead of the current trial.

Last week, Iwik said in his rebuttal statement that he was
arrested in ways which violated standard arrest procedure. He
said police persuaded him in many ways to admit to the murder of
Syafruddin, who was better known as Udin.

Udin was beaten to death in August last year in the small town
of Bantul, some 30 kilometers south of here. Many believed the
killing was related to his critical writings over several Bantul
administration policies. (aan)
