It's party all month in Jakarta
Jakarta, an old city that bears many names in the past: Sunda Kalapa, Kalapa, Batavia and Jacatra, will celebrate its official 477th anniversary on June 22. The Jakarta administration is preparing a full month celebration to beautify and enliven the city. Here are the upcoming events.
June 14-July 14: Jakarta Great Sale 2004 Location: Department stores, malls, retail centers, hotels, restaurants across the capital.
This annual event is meant to attract visitors to enjoy special discounted rates, merchandise and prices.
The opening ceremony will be held on June 24 at Plaza Semanggi on Jl. Jend. Sudirman with 24 department stores, 21 malls, 170 retailers, 18 hotels, 35 restaurants taking part in the program.
June 15-26: Jakarta Anniversary Arts Festival Location: Jakarta Arts Building (GKJ) in Pasar Baru, Central Jakarta
Various programs, like performances, music recitals, will be held at the center as part of the Jakarta anniversary celebrations.
June 17-July 18: Jakarta Fair 2004 Location: Kemayoran Fairground in Kemayoran, Central Jakarta.
An annual tradition since 1962, the fair will feature various kind of programs, like Jakarta food festival, music shows and trade exhibitions.
June 20: Indonesia Interculture Festival (from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m.) Location: Jl. Kebon Sirih in Central Jakarta
The festival will feature traditional and modern music and dance performances. Arts workshop and shows, including a program titled "Jakarta Rhythm of Percussion," will be held at the same location.
June 20: Jakarta International 10-K (from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m.) Location: Monas, Jl. MH Thamrin, Jl. Jend Sudirman
At least 28 foreign runners and 20 Indonesian runners will take part in the competition besides an estimated 20,000 Jakartans participate in the event.
June 26: Youth Night and Fireworks Festival Location: Karnaval beach in Ancol Dreamland Park in North Jakarta
Live music and fireworks shows will light up the night sky.
June 27: Jakarta Street Carnival Route: Sudirman-Thamrin-National Monument Park People will join in motorcades of festival carriages. The carnival will also feature on-street Balinese Kecak dance show.
