It's not just cricket
I would like to comment on Piero Ronci's letter 'Colonialism and cricket' (June 28).
Cricket is not the only sport to have been exported from Britain. Soccer had its origins in Scotland.
Is the worldwide pursuit of the game a symbol of Scottish imperialism? And badminton, once a very English sport, originally adapted from an Indian game, is this too a neocolonialist phenomenon? Rubbish!
Sport is sport, able to cross borders, a point of common enthusiasm not of difference. Granted, cricket may never become as popular as soccer and its distant cousin baseball, derived from the English game "rounders" played by the young as a preliminary to cricket, which has a far greater following... hold on, baseball is an American imperialist cultural intrusion too, isn't it?
