ITB suspends six students

BANDUNG: Six students of the School of Geology at the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) have been suspended for between one and four semesters after being found guilty of torturing a new student during a two week initiation period recently.

The new student, Muhamad Imam Prasetyo, 19, suffered acute kidney failure and had to undergo dialysis eight times to treat his ailment.

ITB's deputy rector for student affairs Isnu Wardiyanto said on Tuesday the punitive measures were decided by leaders of the institute in a meeting on Aug. 28. The meeting was followed an investigation into the case by an ad hoc team set up by the ITB rectorate.

Another 59 students who organized the initiation program were reprimanded. (25/lup)
