ITB students oppose eviction of vendors

BANDUNG: Hundreds of Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) students held a protest on Monday at the ITB administration office, demanding that the school refrain from evicting street vendors who sell goods on campus.

The protest followed an order from the ITB rector prohibiting street vendors from selling goods on campus effective June 1 for "security, cleanliness and order" reasons.

Annas Hanafiah, the spokesman of the ITB Student Association, said that the students challenged the decision, because it would merely widen the gap between the students, as part of the society's elite, and the ordinary people. -- JP
