Is cholesterol-free food safe?

Dear Dr. Donya

I need some clarification about all the cholesterol-free food (e.g. cheese, butter, meat, peanuts) which have 'cholesterol- free' mentioned on them.

Is it safe for somebody like my husband, who has moderate cholesterol, to consume? This has always been very confusing as I am not sure how safe they are. Just for your information my husband's total cholesterol level is 250, HDL is 39, LDL is 180.

Please be kind enough to inform me regarding this matter. Thank you once again.

Dear Angie,

It is my pleasure to answer your question. Foods that are advertised as cholesterol-free or low in cholesterol are safe for your husband to consume. Cholesterol is also necessary for the body to function properly, so consume it in moderation, not too much, not too little.

Food is not the only answer for decreasing cholesterol. Exercise, drinking and smoking play a role too.

A good number for cholesterol is 200, HDL should be more than 45 in a man and triglyceride LDL lower than 160. For your husband, I would recommend that he controls his diet, exercises and has another blood test in three to six months.
