Irian to export garments
JAKARTA (JP): Irian Jaya will export 36,000 sets of work clothing to Madang province, Papua New Guinea (PNG) as part of a cooperation agreement between the Irian Jaya chapter of the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin) and its PNG counterpart.
Tony Uloly, head of Kadin's chapter in Irian Jaya, said in Jayapura on Saturday that the garments would be exported by CV Yotefa Permai next month.
Tony added that last month he headed a local trade mission to Port Moresby, Lae and Madang which was enthusiastically welcomed by both governments and businessmen.
He said PNG businessmen had expressed keen interest in buying products from Irian Jaya such as construction materials, textile products, especially ready-to-wear garments and spices, notably garlic and red onion.
Prices for those commodities in PNG are quite expensive compared to Irian Jaya, which shares a border with the neighboring country, he said, adding that the proximity of both areas, as well as cheaper prices, made Irianese products more competitive.(06)
