Irene takes silver in junior c'ships

JAKARTA (JP): Indonesia's young running sensation Irene Truitje Joseph won silver in the women's 100 meter dash at the eighth Asia Junior Championships at the National Stadium in Singapore on Friday evening.

Irene, the 1999 Southeast Asian Games gold medalist in the event, clocked a time of 11.89 seconds, far from her personal best of 11.56 seconds set at the Games.

Antara reported China's Wang Ping Qin won the gold in a time of 11.55 seconds, while teammate Juan Hong Zhu took the bronze in a time of 12.12 seconds.

In the men's 800m, Salah Fadila of Saudi Arabia finished in a time of 1:49.17 to claim the gold medal, followed by Mohammed Al Azemi of Kuwait with a time of 1:49.53 and K.M. Binu of India, who finished in 1:49.60. (yan)
