Investigators study Tansil case suspects
JAKARTA (JP): The East Jakarta Prosecutor's Office has assigned 18 prosecutors to study dossiers of a dozen suspects allegedly involved in last month's escape of a convicted businessman.
"There are six teams, each team comprising three prosecutors, to handle two suspects' dossiers," Saleh Abdurrahman, a senior prosecutor at the office, told The Jakarta Post yesterday.
Head of the office, Lukman Bahmid, received the dossiers from the East Jakarta police precinct on Monday.
Eddy Tansil, the boss of the giant Golden Key business group walked out of the prison and disappeared last month, supposedly abetted by prison wardens. Tansil was sentenced to 20 years for defrauding state-owned Bank Pembangunan Indonesia in August 1994.
Although a tycoon is involved, the Prosecutor's Office will not give special attention to the case.
"It is just a regular case, people consider it scandalous because Eddy is involved, we would not have received particular attention if a burglar escaped," Saleh said.
Police have launched a massive search that stretches beyond national borders. Minister of Justice Oetojo Oesman has promised to recapture Tansil within three months.
On Wednesday, National Police Chief Lt. Gen. Dibyo Widodo told a hearing at the House of Representatives that the police are trying to trace the whereabouts of Tansil's wife and six children who fled the country at about the same time as Eddy did.
Agung Dipo, a judge appointed to handle one of the dossiers, said that prosecutors will assess the completeness of the dossiers within a week.
Saleh, however, said that prosecutors will need about two weeks as they had just been notified of their assignments on Tuesday. (14)
