Intellectual debate

Like Mr. Sri Pamoejo Raharjo (Your Letters, Nov. 19, 1996), I also followed the recent open debate in the local media over Habibie's zigzag theory to reduce the current high interest rates. The theory was opposed by most prominent economists in the country. Each of them presented their logical and interesting argument and analysis on the subject. Many others also joined the open debate by writing articles to express their point of view. Some agreed, some did not.

Far from annoying, in my opinion, this kind of intellectual debate is very good and healthy. It shows transparency and a sign of democracy, where everyone competent in this field is willing and encouraged to give their opinion for the best of the country. Besides, it gives the opportunity for laymen like me to observe and learn how the professionals deal with and work out the country's economic situations.
