Insurance plan for councillors opposed

TANGERANG: Tangerang regency councillors have proposed personal accident insurance for themselves in next year's regency budget, but the community has come out against the proposal.

"The councillors have no need for the insurance, and they do not have a strong argument in asking for it," said Mahrus, chairman of the coastal community association, on Wednesday.

"The councillors' job is to improve the welfare of the people and to create an administration that is free from collusion, corruption and nepotism. They are not supposed to squeeze money out of the people," Mahrus said.

Achmad Hidayat, chairman of the Tangerang branch of the Indonesian National Youth Committee, echoed Mahrus.

"The councillors already enjoy luxury facilities from the moment they wake up in the morning to when they go to bed at night," he said.

Hidayat said it was not known whether the councillors had already proposed to administration officials that they receive accident insurance. -- JP
