Inputs sought from ministers, envoys

JAKARTA: At least three Cabinet ministers and several foreign envoys are expected to appear at the House of Representatives to share their thoughts on the truth and reconciliation commission.

The lawmakers have also arranged separate hearings with National Police chief Gen. Da'i Bachtiar, non-governmental activists and community leaders to discuss the bill on the commission being drafted by the House.

Victims of past abuses and their relatives will also be involved in the drafting process.

Minister of Home Affairs Hari Sabarno, Minister of Foreign Affairs Hassan Wirayuda, and Minister of Justice and Human Rights Yusril Ihza Mahendra will be the first to be consulted by the legislators. The House has scheduled the meeting with the ministers for Sept. 16.

The remaining hearings will be held when the House resumes its sitting in November.

The selected foreign ambassadors are from South Africa, Chile, Argentina and Bosnia, countries that have established such a commission. -- JP
