Injured crash victims remain hospitalized

Seven people who were seriously injured in a bus and train collision in Sragen, Central Java, on Monday, are still undergoing intensive medical treatment at three hospitals in Surakarta and Sragen.

In the meantime, 15 others who were killed in the deadly collision were buried on Tuesday.

Thoriq, Anggita, Muslikah and Sunah are being treated at the Brayat Minulyo General Hospital in Solo, Tri Muryati is undergoing intensive treatment at the Moewardi General Hospital in Solo while Wahyudi and Tarjono are at the Yakssi General Hospital in Semarang.

Tabien, one of the injured victim's relatives, said in Surakarta on Tuesday that all the victims would probably need a long time to recover.

He explained that Thoriq was still on the critical list while Muslikah who suffered a fractured spine and Sunah whose left leg was broken would undergo major surgery.

He confirmed that state-owned railway company PT Kereta Api Indonesia (PT KAI) and insurance company PT Jasa Raharja have expressed their commitment to pay compensation to the relatives of the deceased and provide financial assistance for the wounded victims until they fully recovered.

All the victims and those killed in the incident were family members. They were all victims of a collision between a train and a passenger bus transporting them from Tegal to Sragen to attend a wedding party in Gondang village in Sragen regency.

The tragedy occurred when the economy class train Matarmaja which was on its way from Jakarta to Malang, East Java, hit the bus and dragged it some 200 meters at 2:20 a.m. on Monday, killing 15 of the bus passengers instantly.

The barrier at the railway crossing did not function well and the bell did not ring. Sudarmono Widagdo who was on day duty was named key suspect in the collision case.

The newlyweds Suparjo and Saparoh were among the dead victims and their bodies were buried in Gandong while the bodies of the 13 others were brought to Tegal on Monday for burial in their home village in the Tegal regency on Tuesday.
