Indosat ready for Y2K

JAKARTA (JP): International telecommunications provider PT Indosat assured its customers that the company was in compliance with the Y2K computer bug and its services would continue uninterrupted at the turn of the century, Djoko Prayitno, the company's general manager, said on Thursday in Batam.

The company has been conducting a simulation experiment in cooperation with other telecommunications companies from Singapore and Malaysia to enable a continuing service, he said at the Indosat Y2K Readiness seminar.

"We are sure that undersea telephone connections and the satellite which connects 36 countries will perform properly," he told Antara.

He added that the experiment, which was held with several international companies, showed that Indosat's equipment met the requirement.

The Y2K bug originated from a programming practice that used only two digits to indicate the year. Noncompliant computers can mistake 2000 for 1900 and breakdown at the start of the new year. (06)
