Indosat launches ATM-Acasia

JAKARTA (JP): International telecommunications provider PT Indosat launched on Thursday the Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) Acasia real-time data transfer system among six member countries of the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN).

The ATM-Acasia is a network developed in 1997 by telecommunications providers Indosat (Indonesia), CAT Thailand (Thailand), Jabatan Telekom Brunei (Brunei), PLDT Philipina (the Philippines), Singtel (Singapore) and Telekom Malaysia (Malaysia).

Indosat data network development manager Prastowo Wibowo said ATM-Acasia could transmit large applications of voice, data, and video at a rate of up to 155 megabytes per second (mbps).

The launch at Indosat's auditorium was held simultaneously with the launch of a broadband network at the telecommunications exhibition AsiaComm/ExpoComm 2000 in Bangkok, Thailand. People in Jakarta could participate in the Bangkok launch through ATM- Acasia's real-time video conferencing. (10)
