Indonesian Television

From Republika

It is a tendency today for television stations in Indonesia to remake foreign programs -- Indonesian Idol, Akademi Fantasi, Model Indonesia are examples. These programs bring in a lot of money for the television stations but they may have an adverse effect on viewers because they encourage hedonism.

It is against many religions to see men and women kissing in public or to watch women donning miniskirts. Where is our Oriental culture, which is characterized by moral decency and honesty?

Television stations should refrain from introducing programs full of hedonistic content. The TV ratings for such programs may be high but it does not necessarily mean the majority of Indonesians approve of them.

Indonesians, most of whom are Muslims, are civilized people that uphold ethics and morality. They are not liberals like in the West.
