Indonesia will contend 10 events at Atlanta
JAKARTA (JP): Indonesia will figure in 10 of the 26 events contested at the 26th Olympic Games in Atlanta from July 19 to Aug. 4 with a 39-strong team, chief of Indonesia's Olympic team project Soebardi Soear said yesterday.
The 10 events in question are track and field, tennis, table tennis, badminton, archery, weightlifting, boxing, beach volleyball, swimming and windsurfing.
Soebardi said that of the 10 events, Indonesia will rely heavily on badminton for medals. "At least, we hope we can get exactly the same number of medals that we got in the 1992 Barcelona Olympics: two gold, two silver and one bronze."
Indonesia has failed to earn two wild cards for judo athletes Aprilia Marzuki and Krisna Bayu and is waiting to find out if it obtained one for kayaking. It has a slim chance as rowers Anisi and Agus finished fourth in the Olympic qualifying round for Asian rowers in Japan last month.
"By June 23 we shall know (whether we have it or not)," Soebardi said.
As for archery, Indonesia has secured three Olympic berths after winning a bronze medal at the world archery championship here in July last year. But it is yet to decide which of its four top archers will go to Atlanta. "They (Dahliana, Nurfitriyana, Hamdiah and Purnama Pandiangan) are still competing for the Olympic, team which should be formed sometime between June 19 and June 23," Soebardi said.
Soebardi said the decision to figure in the 10 events was based on President Soeharto's instruction to take part in events which feature Indonesian athletes at their best.
Indonesia's Olympic team is scheduled to go to Atlanta on July 8, led by Soebardi, after paying a visit to President Soeharto a few days earlier. But it will not be a full team. Indonesia's boxing team will go to Atlanta from Cuba, where they are now training. Indonesia's beach volleyball team will arrive from France and Indonesia's badminton team will depart on July 17 from Jakarta. (arf)
