Indonesia to 'sell' carbon emissions
JAKARTA: The Indonesian delegation to an environment forum in the Philippines is set to offer developed countries 13 projects for carbon emission reduction under the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM), says an official.
Deputy State Minister for Environment Conservation Liana Bratasida who will lead the delegation to the Manila meeting scheduled for Sept. 10 to Sept. 12 said that the South East Asia Forum on Greenhouse Gas Mitigation, Market Mechanisms and Sustainable Development will be the best forum to market CDM projects in Indonesia.
Indonesia expects to "sell" 445,919 tons of carbon to developed countries, she said. Each ton of the reduction in carbon emissions valued at between US$ 3 to $5.
CDM is aimed at achieving cost-effective greenhouse gas (GHG) mitigation for industrialized countries by promoting sustainable development in developing countries.
For investment, companies in developing countries will earn in return certified emission reductions (CERs) that developed countries may use to meet Kyoto Protocol commitments.
Indonesia currently has 7 million tons of carbon emission reduction potential that developed countries can pay the government for. -- JP
