Indonesia to select shooters at Kapolri Cup
Indonesia to select shooters at Kapolri Cup
JAKARTA (JP): The Indonesian Shooting and Hunting Association
will choose next month the team for the 19th Southeast Asian
(SEA) Games here in October.
Coach Soebagio M. said yesterday final selection would be
during the Seventh Kapolri (the Indonesia Police Chief) Cup and
the Bhayangkara Cup from July 28 to Aug. 2.
"We'll select 37 from the 42 shooters who are being groomed in
a decentralized training program," he said.
Marksmen have been trained in four training camps in January,
March, May and this month.
From 42 shooting events, athletes from only 10 events will
enter centralized training after the championships.
These events are the men's and women's running target, men's
and women's air rifle, men's and women's air pistol, women's
small bore prone, women's small bore sport rifle three position,
the women's individual double trap and the women's team double
trap.
"These events are the ones we expect to win gold in at the
Games," he said.
Indonesia won two golds, three silvers and three bronzes at
the 1995 SEA Games in Chiang Mai, Thailand. Host Thailand took 19
golds, 12 silvers and seven bronzes.
Soebagio said the training camp system had increased athletes'
discipline and motivation.
"We increase our goals from time to time so our shooters have
to practice harder," he said.
The National Sports Council has given the association a target
of six gold medals from the 42 on offer at this year's Games.
Soebagio said Indonesian shooters were expected to help
prevent Thailand from keeping the overall title at the Games.
"Based on their preparation, I think they can meet the target.
The most important thing is to improve our results on the last
Games," he said.
The association is planning overseas stints for its shooters
including the Southeast Asian Shooting Championships in Chinese
Taipei in September.
Meanwhile, South Korea, the Philippines, Malaysia, Chinese
Taipei and India will compete at the second Wismoyo Cup Judo
Championship in Jambi on Aug. 2 and Aug. 3.
More than 200 judoka will compete in the championship.
Indonesia will be represented by 28 judoka who are being
groomed for the SEA Games. (yan)
