Indonesia reigns at Merlion Cup

JAKARTA (JP): The national rowing team being prepared for the Kuala Lumpur Southeast Asian (SEA) Games won the overall title at the Merlion Cup in Singapore, bringing home seven of eight gold medals at stake over the weekend.

"We failed to secure a clean sweep when Perlina Karoba finished second behind Puttaraksa Nikre of Thailand in the women's single scull event," the secretary-general of the Indonesian Rowing Association, Budiman Setiawan, told The Jakarta Post in a fax.

"In addition to the eight SEA Games events, we also grabbed two of three golds on offer in the junior division," he said.

The Indonesian gold medalists were Lasmin in the men's single scull; Jamaludin and Anwar in the men's lightweight double scull; Agus Budiaji and Iswandi in the men's coxless pair; Jefraimi Doludea, Aldino Maryandi, Rodiaman and Rahmat in the men's lightweight coxless four; Wenni and Ongelina Ohello in the women's lightweight double scull; Rita and Susilowati in the women's coxless pair; and Ismani, Ulfiatun, Yayan and Ariyani in the women's lightweight coxless four.

In the junior division, Wiwit Widawati won the women's single scull and Kartini Faturaba and Wahyu Aristina finished first in the women's double scull. (nvn)
