Indonesia has executed 11 convicts

JAKARTA: Indonesia has executed only 11 of 70 convicts who were sentenced to death since its independence in 1945, an official said on Tuesday.

Spokesman for the Attorney General's Office Kemas Yahya Rahman said the number excluded three convicted perpetrators of the Bali bombings who were charged under the antiterrorism law.

Most of the convicts on death row were sentenced either for drug charges or premeditated murder, Kemas said.

Those executed before the firing squad were Karta Cahyadi bin Yongki (Jakarta, 1995 for murder), Usen (1978, Surabaya), Hengki Tupawel (1980, East Java), Kusni Kasdut (1980, Surabaya), Roestom alias Hasyim (1985, Pamekasan in East Java), Gatot Sutardjo (1985, Pamekasan), Sukarman alias Bedjo (1987, Pamekasan), Adi Saputro (1992, Surabaya), Katjong Laranu (1995 in Palu, Central Sulawesi), Fredik Soru and Gerson Panjie (2001 in East Nusa Tenggara).

Of the remaining convicts facing execution, 14 have demanded a review of their cases, 25 have asked for clemency, 15 are waiting to hear the Supreme Court's verdict of their appeal and five died in prison.

President Megawati Soekarnoputri rejected in February the request of six drug dealers for clemency. -- Antara
