Indian drowns in pool

JAKARTA (JP): An Indian national identified as Ameer Syed Azeezuddin drowned in a swimming pool at the Country Wood Estates residences in Ciputat, South Jakarta, early on Sunday.

The 28-year-old man was found dead after he fell into the large pool during a weekend party held at the property.

There were conflicting reports on his death.

"I did not see the accident directly. I rushed to the scene after I heard that the victim drowned in the swimming pool," Mukesh, who organized the party, said at Cipto Mangunkusumo General Hospital's morgue in Central Jakarta.

Ari, a colleague of Ameer, said she heard that Amir was pushed into the pool by one of his friends.

"It was meant as a joke. But, unfortunately, Ameer fell into the pool," said Ari, who worked with Ameer at the Resource Club, a garment trading company with headquarters in New York.

The company has a representative office here, located on Jl. Kayu Putih Utara in East Jakarta.

Mukesh, also a friend of Ameer, dismissed the possibility that Ameer was drunk.

"I have experienced a similar accident in Singapore. Ameer might have suffered a muscle spasm. That's why he couldn't make it up to the surface," he told The Jakarta Post.

Atikarman, an employee of the Resource Club, said Ameer died on his way to the nearby Bintaro International Hospital.

She said it was unclear if he was inebriated.

"We brought his body to Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital for a postmortem examination, but the result will only be released on Monday," she said.

Mukesh said Ameer's body would be flown to Madras, India, for burial. (asa)
