India to place new envoy

JAKARTA: The Indian government has appointed Sudhir Tukaram Devare as the Indian ambassador to Indonesia, replacing Vinay Verma.

The Indian embassy said yesterday that Devare is a senior officer of the Indian Foreign Service who gained extensive diplomatic experience through his assignments in Moscow, Washington, Geneva and other places.

A chemistry graduate who joined the Indian Foreign Service in July 1964, Devare is currently serving as ambassador in Kiev. He was previously Indian ambassador in Seoul and consul general in Frankfurt.

He is expected to take up his assignment here shortly. (prs)
