Import from Australia resumes

CILACAP, Central Java (JP): Imports of live cows from Australia to Central Java have returned to normal after being stopped in September, a port official said.

Head of the legal and information division of Tanjung Intan Port in Cilacap, Susiana, said on Tuesday the shipments of Australian cows through the port resumed since early October.

"We unloaded some 1,052 cows from Australian ships in October," she told The Jakarta Post.

Indonesian trade associations halted their Australian imports in September in retaliation for the boycott by the neighboring country's trade unions of Indonesian goods.

Susiana said the shipment of other Australian commodities, such as wheat, remained halted.

She said the province, which previously imported most of its wheat needs from Australia, was sourcing the commodity from Europe.

Imports of wheat shipped from France through the local port reached 27,500 metric tons in October and 20,000 tons in November, Susiana said. (45/cst)
