Imogiri kris goes global
YOGYAKARTA: Imogiri could quickly make a name for itself in the international arena as one of the central producers of kris.
The town recently begun exporting the wavy double-edged dagger made in humble surroundings of the Imogiri subdistrict, Bantul district, to several European countries.
Each month, an average of 200 kris are shipped to the Netherlands and Australia.
Another 400 are marketed across the country, said kris-makers Mugi Slamet and Pujoharjono in Imogiri Tuesday.
They said the subdistrict earns an average Rp 30 million each month from the sale of this traditional dagger.
According to Antara, there are about 10 recognized kris-making centers in Imogiri, employing 100 workers.
