Immigration readies online data base

JAKARTA: The immigration directorate at the Ministry of Justice and Human Rights plans to establish an online information system connecting its 380 offices and consulates as well as 126 entry points across the country.

The system will be important in monitoring and obtaining accurate data on people entering and leaving the country, immigration director-general Iman Santoso said on Wednesday.

He said the system would also help increase security in the country, which has seen a series of terrorist attacks.

The project, which has been in the pipeline for six years, will cost some US$200 million, Iman said, adding that his office is seeking approval of the finance ministry.

The information from the online data base will be shared with other state institutions such as the State Intelligence Agency (BIN), the Attorney General's Office, the National Police and the National Narcotics Agency. -- JP
